Sue John
Accredited Mental Health Social Worker
BA (Hons) MSc Soc Wk Starting out in my professional practice as an art therapist, I worked in psychiatry in the London hospital system. I added social work to my skill base, and now have many years experience in the field of mental health. I have taught both social work and art therapy at tertiary level in Australia, (University of Canberra and La Trobe Uni). I currently work part time as a mental health practitioner for Grand Pacific Health in the Bega Valley, as well as in private practice here at Merimbula Psychology.
I utilise evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as cognitive therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing, expressive and narrative therapies, mindfulness and relaxation strategies. I am also a trained and experienced relationship counsellor. I welcome people from all cultural backgrounds with a wide range of presenting issues including grief and loss, trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship/ family conflict, as well as those adjusting to major changes in their health or life circumstances. I believe in offering a safe, respectful space for people to explore difficult and complex issues, where they can access their knowledge and strengths, learn new skills, and find a sense of resolution to emotional pain, so that they can live more fully according to their values and goals. I now work mainly with adults, under the Medicare Better Access scheme. I have found that Merimbula Psychology clinicians and staff are such an inspiring and supportive group of people; it is a very creative and nurturing place to work. |
